There's a moment in every engineering design review where a promising idea meets the resistance of reality — a wing profile that looks elegant on paper but stalls in simulation. I've come to realize that Carnatic music has its own version of that moment: a raga phrase that sounds beautiful in isolation but collapses the instant it's asked to sustain a full alapana.
In robotics, we rarely get a design right on the first attempt. Every prototype teaches you something the CAD model couldn't — a weight imbalance, a fastener that interferes with a servo, a bracket that flexes under load. My Guru approaches teaching a varnam the same way: not by explaining the raga, but by having me sing it, imperfectly, again and again, until the imperfections point to exactly what needs work.
That is the core lesson aerodynamics taught me about music, and vice versa: mastery is not a single correct answer you arrive at — it's a converging process, one adjustment at a time.
A wing's camber is calculated to the millimeter, yet a great aircraft still has to feel right in the air. A gamaka in Carnatic music is bound by strict grammar, yet the best renditions feel spontaneous. Both disciplines demand technical precision in service of something that, ultimately, has to feel alive.
As I look toward studying aerospace engineering in college, I don't see it as leaving music behind — I see it as bringing the same patient, iterative mindset into a new domain, while continuing to carry my Guru Parampara forward on stage.
